This installation demonstrates the architectural versatility of SIB’s terrazzo systems, combining two complementary products to create a cohesive design scheme that unites horizontal and vertical surfaces.

The Challenge

The project required an elegant reception counter with integrated terrazzo finishes that would seamlessly connect with the flooring scheme. Rather than opting for prefabricated elements, the installation team chose to create the entire counter frontage in situ using SIBECO TERRAZZO WALL – a technically demanding approach that delivers exceptional results in the hands of professional, experienced technicians.

Technical Approach

SIBECO TERRAZZO WALL features *thixotropic properties that enable vertical application without slumping or sagging. This specialist variant maintains its position on vertical surfaces during curing, allowing installers to create continuous terrazzo finishes across complex geometries.

The installation process required careful planning. After constructing the counter framework with integrated brass detailing to define edges and transitions, applicators built up the terrazzo coating across all vertical surfaces. Once fully cured, the demanding grinding and polishing process began – arguably the most challenging phase of vertical terrazzo work, requiring considerable experience to achieve the flawless finish visible in the completed installation.

Complete System Integration

The project showcases two SIB systems working in harmony:

SIBEXTREME AG STYLE (floors and stairs): A high-performance decorative concrete system contributing toward satisfying LEED EQ Credit 4.2 (Low-Emitting Materials) and BREEAM Hea 02 (Indoor Air Quality). The system is EMICODE® EC1 PLUS certified, confirming very low emissions of volatile organic compounds.

SIBECO TERRAZZO WALL (skirting and counter frontage): Applied in situ to create continuous vertical terrazzo surfaces with the refined aggregate detailing visible throughout the space.

This combination demonstrates SIB’s product  freedom philosophy – enabling designers to specify complementary products that integrate floors with built-in furniture, walls, and other architectural elements.

The Result

The finished installation exemplifies the sophisticated aesthetic achievable when technical expertise meets architectural ambition. The continuous material flow from floor to counter creates visual coherence, whilst the brass detailing adds refined definition to edges and transitions.

The project demonstrates both the versatility of SIB’s terrazzo systems and the exceptional skill of specialist installers who can execute challenging vertical applications to the exacting standards required for exposed reception areas.

Technical Note: Thixotropic Properties

Thixotropic materials exhibit a gel-like consistency at rest but become more fluid when agitated or worked. In the context of SIBECO TERRAZZO WALL, this means the material can be applied to vertical surfaces where it maintains its position without slumping, yet remains workable during application. Once curing begins, the material holds firmly in place until fully hardened – essential for creating consistent vertical terrazzo finishes.
