A private home in Ansião, central Portugal, using a product that doesn’t get talked about often enough: SIBQUARTZO.

SIBQUARTZO is a coloured dry shake surface hardener, made from calibrated quartz, mineral aggregates, Portland cement and chemical admixtures. It’s sprinkled onto fresh concrete at 3 to 6 kg per square metre and worked in mechanically, forming a dense anti-wear layer that becomes part of the slab rather than sitting on top of it.

The technical numbers are the reason it’s specified: 60 MPa compressive strength and 10 MPa flexural strength to EN 13892-2, A6 abrasion resistance to EN 13892-4, SH850 surface hardness, and A1fl fire reaction to ISO 1716. It also cuts dust significantly, which matters as much in a domestic garage or covered terrace as it does in a distribution centre.

Its usual home is heavy industry: car parks, loading bays, aircraft hangars, logistics centres, automotive assembly plants. But it’s rated for indoor and outdoor use and comes in a wide colour range, which is what makes projects like this one possible. Here the applicators worked it in a warm sand tone with a stamped texture and saw-cut joints, giving a hard-wearing exterior surface that sits comfortably against the existing stone walls.

Worth noting: SIBQUARTZO is a mineral product, so tonal variation across a floor is normal and expected. It’s part of the character, not a defect. Colour should always be validated against a physical sample before application.
