🏛️ MAAT (Museum of Art and Architecture) , Lisbon

SIBLAND’s innovative SIBEXTREME AF FLOW flooring solution harmonises with the fluid, modern design of MAAT Lisbon, a museum that redefines the relationship between art, architecture, and public space.

Winner of the Best Museum Architecture of the Year in 2017 at the Leading Culture Destinations Awards (known as “The Oscars for Museums”), MAAT is a cultural landmark that captures the essence of its stunning 38,000 m² riverside site and the extraordinary light of Lisbon. (The awards recognise institutions, organisations, and cities that have provided exemplary contributions to local cultural life and showcase emerging destinations.)

Project Highlights:

  • – Seamless, self-levelling overlay that complements the museum’s flowing, organic architecture
  • – High-performance flooring with exceptional durability for high-traffic areas
  • – Customisable, colour-uniform surfaces that reflect Portuguese traditions and modern design
  • – Contribution to the museum’s vision of a space for congregation, exploration, and discovery

Design Challenge:
Creating a flooring system that would:

  • – Complement the museum’s seamless, open design and fluid architectural language
  • – Withstand heavy foot traffic while maintaining aesthetic appeal and functionality
  • – Reflect the interplay of light and shadow, a key feature of the museum’s architecture
  • – Align with MAAT’s mission to blend art, architecture, and technology

SIBLAND’s Solution:
SIBEXTREME AF FLOW was selected for its:

  • – Seamless application: Perfectly suited for MAAT’s flowing, interconnected spaces.
  • – Exceptional durability: High compressive strength (C 60 N/mm²) and flexural strength (F 13+) ensure longevity in high-traffic areas.
  • – Abrasion resistance: Ranging from Böhme A5 to A1.5, making it ideal for a museum environment.
  • – Pumpable and self-levelling: Easy and fast application, even in complex architectural spaces.
  • – Customisable design: Colour-uniform floors that align with the museum’s modern aesthetic.

The End Result:
The installation of SIBEXTREME AF FLOW enhances MAAT’s unique architectural narrative:

  • – The seamless, self-levelling surface mirrors the museum’s flowing design, creating a sense of continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces.
  • – The durable yet elegant flooring encourages exploration and interaction, embodying MAAT’s mission as a place for encounter and discovery.
  • – The colour-uniform finish complements the museum’s modern aesthetic, while its high abrasion resistance ensures it remains pristine despite heavy foot traffic.
